The season follows a dysfunctional, blended family composed of Madison Clark (Kim Dickens), her fiancé Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis), her daughter Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey), her drug-addicted son Nick (Frank Dillane) and his lover Luciana Galvez (Danay García), as they reach the U.S.-Mexico border and find refuge on a ranch owned by the Otto family, consisting of patriarch Jeremiah Otto (Dayton Callie) and his two sons Troy (Daniel Sharman) and Jake (Sam Underwood). Meanwhile, Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) reunites with Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades), who was presumed dead, who returns to find his daughter Ofelia (Mercedes Mason) who was separated from the group.
Thinking that he has gotten to the end of this, Alex confronts Dr. Alanis, only to find him dead. This further complicates the matter of Sara's death, who is sure to be alive now. Season 3 is just getting started, and new complications arise, making the rest of the season a thrilling ride. Who Killed Sara is now streaming on Netflix.
Travis, Madison and Alicia make it to the U.S./Mexico border where they are captured by an armed group. Travis is separated from the girls and is taken to a room where Nick, an injured Luciana and other captives. They shoot captives, who are deemed illegal immigrants, to see how long they turn into Walkers. The trio form an escape plan with other inmate but the person is killed and Travis is recaptured and made to fight the dead in a pit.
Elsewhere, Strand leads Daniel to the hotel believing Ofelia is still there. They reach the hotel where it is abandoned and overrun. Strand is forced to confess that Ofelia ran off and doesn't know where she is. As a herd approaches, Daniel abandons Strand to the dead.
Jake and Alicia arrive at Black Hat, where Alicia discovers Ofelia to be alive and allied with Walker's tribe after they took her in. While refusing to their original agreement, Walker agrees to a parley, Ofelia leaves with Jake while Alicia remains until he returns. While Madison forces Troy to send men to retrieve Alicia which results in several of Walker's men dead. Despite Jake's attempts to mend the truce, Walker has him beaten and Ofelia cast out. Given a job in the kitchen, she cooks a meal for the militia. The men, including Nick, get sick or die from as a result. Madison realizes it was Ofelia's doing and stops her from escaping to beat her senseless.
Inside the pantry, the air vent is broken, and people are bit. If suffocation doesn't kill them, the turned people will. While Crazy Dog and Ofelia fix the vent. Alicia makes a tough decision to let the bit sacrifice themselves in order to maintain air supply and prevent more death. Alicia bonds with 9-11 widow Christine who encourages her to put on a strong presence for the rest of them. Despite the vent turning back on, people passed out and become Walkers. As she fights off the dead and puts down Christine, Madison, who has rescued Nick and Troy, manage to clear path for her to get out. Everyone regroups and decide to go to the dam, but Alicia chooses to go alone to Jake's cabin and find her own way to live in the world.
Nick goes on a binge of drugs and drinking, wrangling Troy into joining him, eventually wading through a group of walking dead. The next morning, Daniel agrees to let Madison's group come to the dam, but Nick and Troy decide to stay at the bazaar.

In 2018, Devonte and his siblings were in their family's SUV when it was reportedly intentionally driven off of a 100-foot cliff by his adoptive parents. Devonte's body was never recovered, but the bodies of five children were found at or near the scene. Investigators determined Devonte was likely also in the SUV and he was declared dead in 2019.

Tim then heads back to the noodle house where he works, passing a reference to the classic villainous group the Church of Blood on his way. As he talks with his family at the noodle house, it's clear that they're suspicious of him having been talking to the cops, and his cousin is clearly involved in illegal activity of some sort that Tim doesn't want to be a part of. However, they're interrupted by a news report declaring Robin is dead and Joker has been locked up in Arkham Asylum.
In Jason's room, Dick starts going through his dead friend's hiding places. Inside the room, he finds a locker key and a pile of money. Dick goes to investigate a loft that he finds a listing for in the pile. He finds a chemistry lab, where he finds the remnants of whatever Jason took prior to confronting Joker. Then, someone else enters the warehouse. He and Dick fight. The man, who is a drug dealer, has come to see what a rival chemist is doing. Dick tells him to stop selling drugs.
Meanwhile, Donna checks in on Louis who is exclaiming in annoyance. Since the merger, the new quartermaster, Barbara L. Tottingham, will not buy any Uniball pens, instead purchasing pens that keep breaking in Louis' hand. Louis believes that the new quartermaster has a vendetta against him, as Donna tricks him into applying the spilled ink on his hand onto his face in the shape of Hitler's moustache and to do an impression of a Nazi salute, which he believes to be a rotator cuff exercise. Louis makes a note to Norma on his Dictaphone on how he needs Barbara L. Tottingham's number, before relaying to another secretary to tell Norma to purchase him Uniball pens or he will cancel her vacation. Louis tries to get a Bran bar from the pantry, only to find that they are all gone. He finds Nesbitt standing behind him, who is in fact the real quartermaster: Barbara L. Tottingham was in fact a convoluted reference linking to a BLT sandwich, and eventually the Count of Monte Cristo, a story about revenge from the assumed dead. Nesbitt tells him that he is taking his revenge on Louis by not only refusing to purchase Bran bars for the pantry but by outright banning them from being consumed in the firm. Louis tells Donna about the situation, and he believes that Nigel's revenge has only begun unless he is stopped, something which Donna says Louis can only do by removing him as quartermaster.
With Lawrence now dead, Keira is moved into the Maguire house by middle Maguire family member Finn, with whom she is having a relationship with, and before long, Keira is seen admiring her new digs and the trappings of her luxury lifestyle, leaving viewers wondering whether she will relinquish her undercover duties, usurp Burton's matriarch and join them instead.
